San Roque Old Course
Another excellent course located in the foothills of the intimidating Sierra Bermeja mountains, the world renowned San Roque offer superb views of the surrounding mountains and deep blue Mediterranean.
Originally designed by Dave Thomas in 1990, the layouts and bunkers have been tweaked by Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros to provide a real challenge for even the most experienced player.
Many a golfer has played the round of their life on the San Roque, and some say that it has a touch of magic about it, and that you have to play it at least once to see what happens.
Tight fairways lined by powerful oak trees set the standard, and you will need all of your wits about you if you want to negotiate the steep drops, undulating greens and tricky bunkers and post a good score here. The final hole of the San Roque, wide open and surrounded by shimmering lakes, is one of golf’s most majestic sights.
This championship course is the shorter of the two but it doesn’t mean its less difficult in fact the minimum handicap needed to play this fantastic course is 24 for men and 28 for women, suggesting that this is in fact the harder course.
This majestic course got voted 10th best course in Spain by Golf Digest magazine in 2005.
In 2005 it also held the Spanish open on the European PGA tour, reflecting the stature held by this course.
The resort is filled with numerous top facilities to accommodate your every need with a pitching area, putting greens, three practice bunkers, a short game area which is specifically for members of the ‘Seve Ballesteros Natural Golf School,’ a rental shop, pro shop, club fitting and also GPS buggies.
If you become a lover of the course that much then members get preferential rates for world class courses such as Valderrama and Sotogrande. Other ways to relax within the resort include horse-riding and eating out at one of their bars or restaurant.
San Roque New Course
The San Roque club expanded in 2002 with the development of the New Course to build on the reputation of the Old Course as one of the finest in the world.
This new course is a unique and distinct challenge while still retaining the design philosophies that made the old course such a legend. Designed by the famous Perry Dye, San Roque’s new course works in synergy with the glorious San Roque hills to create a rich, undulating experience with spectacular views which is a pleasure to play.
Each hole has five different tee positions to accommodate all levels of players, providing a great golfing experience for new and experienced players alike.
More generous fairways than those of the unforgiving old course should not deceive, you will need all your cunning and guile to negotiate the perfectly judged obstacles and stay out of trouble, water hazards and devilish bunkers are the slightest misjudgement away, but that simply makes completing the course all the more of an achievement.
Following in the footsteps of the old course, the new course held the Spanish Open in 2006, just some four years after it opened. This therefore shows just how expertly crafted the San Roque resort is as a whole. The minimum handicap to play on this course is 28 for men and 36 for women.
As this course is part of the same resort as the old course there are the same top facilities available to accommodate your every need. This includes a pitching area, putting greens, three practice bunkers, a short game area which is specifically for members of the ‘Seve Ballesteros Natural Golf School,’ a rental shop, pro shop, club fitting and also GPS buggies.
