Why the Costa del Sol For Golf ?
Incredible scenery, lush, green grass and lashings of sunshine have made the Costa Del Sol a paradise for golfing fanatics all year round. With 320 days plus of sunshine every year and average temperatures of around 65 degrees fahrenheit, the Andalucian province and surrounding areas are the perfect place to experience some of the finest golfing in the world, and even a dash extra.
There are, at the latest count, somewhere in the region of 55 golf courses spread across the Costa Del Sol, which is often affectionately nicknamed the Costa Del Golf by those who have experienced its delights firsthand.
The facilities range from beginner’s courses, often 9 holes and with experienced instructors available to teach the basics, to world-class, PGA-rated tournament golf courses such as Valderrama in Cadiz, which hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997.
Some of the Costa Del Sol’s golf courses are recognized as the very finest, and the popularity of the region as a golfing retreat has led to expansion in terms of quality as well as capacity right along the coast and even inland.
Each course, set in its own unique, often stunning surroundings, presents a different set of challenges, and a new range of experiences, that allow even the most seasoned professional to tweak their game in the glorious Spanish Sunshine.
Even the tourist destinations further from the coast, such as Sevilla and Cordoba, not traditionally associated with golf, are becoming more populated with top of the range courses, so the choice and diversity allows for a whole new experience every time you return, should you wish it so.
Generous fairways and stunning scenery make the La Cala golf course, near Mijas, one of the favored destinations for the discerning golfer. With its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and lush, unspoiled Spanish countryside combined with perfectly designed holes that challenge every club in a golfer’s arsenal, you’ll want to play all three of La Cala’s championship standard courses. Then perhaps unwind in the resort’s luxurious pool and sauna, dine in the award-winning restaurant and browse the pro-stocked pro shop.
For those looking for a little extra challenge, the unpredictable coastal winds that whip around the Lauro golf course, near the beautiful Sierra de Mijas forest, might prove just the ticket. Fast greens and unique water hazards add to the intrigue, though if you’re having some trouble the Lauro golf school is one of the best. There is also an equestrian center on site, and excellent home-cooked food served in the quaint 18th century club house.
Set in the shadow of the Sierra Bermeja mountains, in the heart of the Spanish countryside, the Estepona golf course is a real treat. Laced with eucalyptus and wild olive trees, and with a stunning view of the Mediterranean, the sloping fairways of the Estepona are a great place to spend a day in the sunshine for fresh and experienced golfers alike.
Amongst the vineyards of Manilva, overlooking the Rock of Gibraltar and northern Africa, the Trent Jones designed La Duquesa golf course on the western extreme of the Costa Del Sol is another one not to be missed for the die-hard fan. Tweaked to perfection, La Duquesa will test your golf skills to the limit in the best possible way.
The course at Valderrama, famously home to the 1997 Ryder Cup, is one of the finest examples in the world of a championship golf course set in beautiful, unspoiled surroundings that lend themselves perfectly to a course rich in subtlety and nuance. With the shade of the trees, and the cool breeze coming in off the Mediterranean to balance the fierce Spanish sun, Valderrama is an experience not to be missed for the keen golfer, and one of the jewels in the Costa Del Sol’s golfing crown.
Golfers of all standards will feel at home in the friendly, five star atmosphere of the San Roque golf resort. Nestled between Marbella and Jerez, at the extreme of the Iberian peninsula, the tranquil essence of the Sunshine Coast can be found in San Roque’s beautifully designed holes and peaceful surroundings.
The palatial Montecastillo Hotel, set in the heart of the Andalucian hills, is home to one of the Costa Del Sol’s most spectacular courses. Designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, the Montecastillo course is renowned for its beauty and quality. Capturing the best of the Spanish climate in a blissfully secluded haven, the Montecastillo is perfect for a relaxing day’s golf, perhaps followed by a trip to nearby Jerez, famous for its sherry and brandy, for an evening’s indulgence.
These are just some of the outstanding golf experiences that the Costa Del Sol in Spain has to offer, but there is a limit to just how much words can do them justice. If you are a keen golfer, you owe it to yourself to experience first-hand the magic and luxury of golfing on the Mediterranean Sunshine Coast all year round.
